Industrial Building Transformation to Apartment

Industrial Building Transformation to Apartment

Freemans Bay

My clients had an interesting challenge – to transform an old engineering workshop with two flats above it into a beautiful apartment.

The brief was to create a cohesive interior that has a nod to the building’s industrial past, but was also eclectic and practical to live in. Living spaces had to be more neutral for hanging art, while rooms that are not living spaces, like the powder room, ensuite and guest bathroom they wanted impact.

For the powder room, which guests use near the main living space, they especially wanted the wow factor. It is the perfect space to go all out because you are not in the space for long. The wonderful mural was printed to fit the spaces in the powder room and the entry to the powder room. My clients each have a room dedicated to their hobbies – a music room and a sewing room and they were willing to be bold in those rooms also. The music room is very special as my client’s sister is an artist, and brother and sister spent many hours painting the fabulous graphics on the feature wall. The jewel colour of the other walls is to set off the acoustic guitar collection, which will eventually be on the wall, but still played regularly. The remaining wall is glass and looks down into the void to the open plan kitchen, living and dining space. This room is visible from below also and the two storey void with a glass exterior wall is a feature of the architectural design.

Testimonial

“We had used other interior designers before but Gaye spent more time listening and never at any time did she try to impose her view or take over.

Gaye knew we wanted a nod to industrial and that we wanted parts of the apartment to have the wow factor. She found colours, a mural and tiles that certainly did that, and we were thrilled. With such a huge space, we really wanted to get everything right, especially the colours and creating a cohesive look. Gaye provided an expert eye, understood what we were wanting to achieve, and delivered a fantastic interior for our new apartment.”
